ABOUT ROXY

Always in high demand ROXY (aka Paul Rothapfel) has fulfilled extensive contracts with 5 star hotels and cruise liners internationally. His career has seen him either as support act, working with or rubbing shoulders with great artists such as the Jacksons, Vince Melouney (Bee Gees and Aztecs) Lyn Bowtell (Bella), Max Merritt, Billy Thorpe, Glenn Shorrock and Diesel.
In between overseas gigs, he was always seen back in Australia entertaining patrons in many venues from small intimate piano bars and restaurants outside staged performances and special unplugged Cabaret shows in many clubs, pubs and theatres.
With most probably the most extensive song list known by any one performer internationally (4000 songs and melodies including over 30 hours of continuous live band recorded backing tracks) ranging from the classics to the new millennium or Dianna Krall to Michael Buble style lounge Jazz to Angels to Cold Chisel style rock), he can cater to any taste using his three tools of trade, a grand piano, blues harp and his voice. Or if you want to get up and boogie you can with his extensive ‘Party Repertoire’ featuring custom (non midi) live recorded backings guaranteed to smoke up the floor and get your mojo going.
Perhaps the first pianoman in the world to have a venue in his name, ROXY's Piano Bar ceased operation in June 2011 following a downturn in the local economy owing to recent catastrophic floods in the South East Queensland.

WHY ROXY

Paul chose ROXY in dedication to relative and idol Samuel ROXY Rothafel – Father of Art Deco, New York Cinema impresario and founder of the Rockettes {formerly the Roxyettes} and Radio City Music Hall showman of the 1920's silent screen era.
For a short documentary click this link HISTORY OF THE ROCKETTES AND RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL
The LOGO Story

In the early 1990's ROXY returned to Australia from Europe (as entertainer on the ill fated Achille Lauro) and was booked to perform at the famous 'Top End Hotel' in Darwin.
It was a long flight from his hometown of Newcastle, and after a near mid-air collision with the plane on which ROXY was travelling, it was suggested that after he checked into his accommodation that he enjoy a few strong beverages at the bar to settle his nerves. This was followed by another strong beverage, and another and another and so on until 3am.
ROXY returned to his room to experience the entire hotel rotating violently and after an unsuccessful attempt to sleep with the room light on (this doesn't work well despite the myth) he decided to have a cold shower to 'shock' his self-inflicted brain into some level of sobriety.
Another 'myth'
Failing this, ROXY remembered that his mum gave him a bottle of very high potency vitamin B capsules to take in the rare event of forced intoxication; to aid a speedy recovery.
Moving back to the bathroom ROXY stumbled through (in total darkness) his soap case, slashing his fingers on concealed safety razors in the process, to reveal a small bottle of oddly coloured capsules.
In the process of actually putting several in his mouth the bottle slipped from his grasp and fell to the floor, along with the contents resulting in them bieng evenly distributed on the bathroom tiles beneath his feet.
ROXY ended up on the floor in an attempt to collect the capsules and place them back into the bottle.
The floor was cold and welcoming to this intoxicated Novacastrian who hadn't until now experienced the Darwin heat or potency of the local brew!
So it was there he slept, wearing nothing but a smile, clutching a pill bottle in his razor slashed fingers and surrounded by a heap of oddly coloured capsules.
This should have been the end of the story but it gets better!
At about 7am the next morning 'Nancy' the room maid entered the room to start her ritual cleaning routine, only to discover a young musician on the bathroom floor, wearing nothing but a pill bottle and its contents.
The screaming should have woken ROXY, but it didn't. It was the screams from the old ladies who were standing outside his hotel room waiting for a bus trip to Palmerston. They had entered the room to see what Nancy was hysterical about.
So, ROXY wakes up then Nancy and everyone screams to see ROXY's corpse magically resurrected and the 'undead' starts screaming from the shock and commotion of it all. Realising he is in the 'altogether', he sits up, bashes his head on the sink and knocks himself out, which to the reports of the several old ladies and Nancy.... "thus killing himself again"
When ROXY finally came too, it was to the ringing of his room telephone. The person on the other end was a journalist who was waiting in the venue for an interview and an exclusive photo for the local Darwin Newspaper.
So, donning a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and jacket, ROXY guised himself in a pair of dark sunglasses and headed to the venue for the ill fated interview. Needless to say, the sunnies stayed on for the photo.
This photo was chosen as the cover of his first album released in 1994 and from this album the logo was born.
ROXY has kept the image of the 'piano-man' as his logo since then and after a few alterations, has become a major part of his branding. Why did he keep it? He says to remind him NEVER to drink 2 bottles of scotch followed by 7 Darwin stubbies, a donor kebab and a pint of milk in one session!
He eventually regained his state of sobriety after being thrown in the swimming pool by Ted Mulry (TMG)
The moral here, Come to ROXY's gigs and feel free to enjoy yourself, but please consume your beverages in moderation, or you too will have your very own Logo to tell your grandchildren about.
The Logo was adorned on the walls in this massive mural by Chalk Artist Andrew Petreau

ABOUT THE VENUE
ROXY'S Piano Bar, situated in the former Brisbane Lions Den @ the Chalk Hotel featured a low lit 'New York' club feel married with LED and intelligent fibre optic lighting to create a great atmosphere for partying it up in a safe and welcoming atmosphere: where all ages were welcome.
ROXY's opened its doors to the general public in April 2011. This was made possible with the collaborative assistance of the owners and management of the coveted Chalk Hotel, who have won numerous awards in recent years including 'Australia's Best Hotel' in 2008.
ROXY's was headed by acclaimed piano vocal entertainer Paul Rothapfel AKA ROXY.
He recently returned to Australia following a successful tour in USA to undertake what could be only considered to be a massive project for a solo musician. A 'Retro-Party Piano Bar' in the Brisbane CBD. This concept was inspired based on the success of his residency at the Brisbane Hilton 'America's Cup Bar' and most recently a similar piano bar situated in his hometown of Newcastle that had ROXY performing to locals for a residency that spanned 8 years.
The venue featured an impressive on-going changing display of chalk art featuring a massive mural of RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL, as well as larger than life portraits of Elton John, Billy Joel, Ray Charles and Roxy himself! There is also a wall dedicated to two much loved identities and personal friends; comedians Lucky Grills and Calvin DeGrey. There was also a VIP signature wall all drawn by local chalk art legend Andrew 'Chalky' Petreau.
The selection of music was 'By Request' meaning the music you heard was what you want! you just had to select a song from his extensive list and write it down on the slips provided, for any mood, any song, any time.
The nights started off tame and usually built up to a riotous mixture of groovy dance themes and songs from the 1950's to the new millennium. It got loud late at night, but that's all a part of the fun. It was totally interactive and a great night out for everyone from teens to baby boomers, in fact we were proud to welcome all the members from the exclusive 'BRISBANE BABY BOOMERS CLUB'
2011 was quite a horrific year at the start with the catastrophic floods and loss of life, also affecting the greater CBD. This jeopardised the start of ROXYs from the onset (being that the grand opening was to be Australia Day) However we pressed on and gave it a shot.
The venue proved to be a success, however with the effect of the floods on the local economy it has proved difficult to keep the venue operating efficiently. We decided to close the venue and give the people of Brisbane some time to restore their lives back to normal.
Currently ROXY is based in New York performing to mainly NY and NJ audiences on board RCCL's luxury liner 'The Explorer of the Seas' until April 2012 with tentative bookings in the Philippines, Scotland, Ireland and New York for the remainder of 2012. Currently working on a new 'headliner' act with big band, ROXY will return to Australia for a short season after seasonal performances in various venues world wide.
ROXY hopes to settle in Brooklyn or Manhattan, New York towards the end of 2012.
